Dodgeball
Did you laugh at "Old School"? Do you quote lines from "Office Space"? Were you entertained by the political incorrectness of "Bad Santa"? If you answered "yes" to those questions, go now and see "Dodgeball". You will not be disappointed.
Peter La Fleur (Vince Vaughn) is unable to make the mortgage payment on his fitness center, Average Joe's, and is faced with the possibility of losing it to his rival, White Goodman (Ben Stiller). White runs the high-intensity gym, Globo gym, across the street, and is obsessed with the idea of shutting down Joe's. In order to come up with the $50,000 to make the payment, Peter and his five dedicated customers enter a high-stakes national dodgeball competition. Yes, it's really as simple as that.
Laughs abound in every scene. While Vaughn plays the everyday normal guy (remember, he runs Average Joe's), Stiller's character is over-the-top in obsessiveness and jock-headedness. He is a caricature of every workout video ever made. The supporting cast from Joe's really brings on the hilarity, ranging from Justin (Justin Long), the high school kid longing to be a cheerleader to get the girl, to Steve (Alan Tudyk) who thinks he's a pirate, along with Gordon (Milton from "Office Space"), Rip Torn as the hilarious coach Patches O'Houlihan, and Kate (Christine Taylor) as the love interest. Plus, watch for Gary Cole and Jason Bateman doing great work as announcers for ESPN 8, "The Ocho".
While some may be turned off by Stiller's character, it balances nicely with Vaughn's portrayal of the average guy. Of anyone, I thought Justin Long (who played Warren Cheswick in NBC's "Ed") gets his breakout role and draws the most laughs simply from the pratfalls and predicaments he's put in. "Dodgeball" is a little crude, but it is loaded with great one-liners and will leave you laughing. Be sure to catch this one! I give it an A-.
"Dodgeball" is rated PG-13 with a running time of 96 minutes.
