Mr. and Mrs. Smith

"Mr. and Mrs. Smith" is the kind of movie you only get in the summer months. There's action, there's romance, but mostly this is a comedy. Granted, when I look back on it, there really is much of a plot. What makes this one work is the chemistry between the two stars, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Regardless of the rumors of their off-screen affection, on-screen these two click, and keep the movie running on all cylinders throughout.

The story opens with John (Pitt) and Jane (Jolie) Smith in marriage counseling. The magic seems to have gone out of their relationship. The verbal sparring here is just as great as the physical sparring yet to come. Turns out that they are both hired assassins working for different agencies. Neither realizes this about the other, that is, until they get in each other's way going after the same target.

From there the action kicks in as one tries to kill or elude the other in a fun game of cat and mouse. Just as they realize they actually love each other, they become targets of their own agencies and have to decide whether to work together to avoid death, or increase their odds of survival by splitting up.

Don't think too much, but sit back and enjoy the fun. Both Pitt and Jolie play off the other with ease, and the action is over-the-top with gunfire and explosions. It's the dialog between the two, whether under questioning from their therapist or under fire from assassins, that will keep you laughing. I could hang out with "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" all summer. I give it an A.

"Mr. and Mrs. Smith" is rated PG-13 with a running time of 2 hours.
