300

"300" is an exciting story displayed in spectacular fashion with amazing computer graphics and animation. The computer effects also allow for the creation of some impressive creatures and a constant flow of spurting blood.

Set in 480 BC, "300" recounts the Battle of Thermopylae, where King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) leads 300 Spartan warriors to their death against a Persian force of thousands. Even when facing such odds, each Spartan fights as if they have a chance of winning the overall battle. Their job is to defend the country they love, and they fight with a pride unknown to any other soldier. Unlike those they fight, these men are professional warriors. Nothing, and no one, is spared. The battles are extremely bloody and not for the faint of heart. At the same time, each group they face brings about a different challenge.

Meanwhile, there is a side story of the King's wife challenging the Senate to send more men to fight alongside her husband. Here, Queen Gorgo fights her own battle as she faces a treacherous senator with his own agenda. These scenes do little to move the story forward, but does provide for some relief from the spilling of blood.

Overall, "300" is best seen on the big screen as the action is intense and broad. Fans of "Braveheart" will be satisfied with the action here, just don't go in with a weak stomach. I give it an A.

"300" is rated R with a running time of two hours.
