Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle
"Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle" rounds out a solid summer of comedy. While "Dodgeball" provided the physical comedy and "Anchorman" was the character comedy, "Harold & Kumar" make for a great stoner comedy. I suspect this will be one of those movies that will live on in college dorm rooms for a while, much like "Office Space" and "Old School".
Harold (John Cho) and Kumar (Kal Penn) are spending their Friday night getting high together. Not surprisingly, they get hungry and debate where to get food. After watching an enticing commercial for White Castle, they become determined to eat numerous Sliders before their night is through. The only thing getting in their way is trying to find an actual White Castle.
While the end of their adventure will bring them to their goal, the journey is the reward for the audience. Cho and Penn are great together, dealing with everything from an escaped cheetah to a horny Neil Patrick Harris. Yes, Doogie Howser is in the movie and will forever taint your image of the young doctor.
Some scenes work better than others, and there are some random aspects that seem disjointed, such as Kumar's dream love affair with a bag of marijuana, or Harold's adventure with animated hamburgers. The obligatory toilet humor and sex jokes abound, but it's the simple camaraderie of Harold and Kumar that pulls the movie together. I would put this one third on the list of summer comedies after "Dodgeball" and "Anchorman", but definitely find it to be rentable. I give it a B.
"Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle" is rated R with a running time of 90 minutes.
