You, Me and Dupree

"You, Me and Dupree" is an inconsistently funny movie that never quite lives up to its potential.

Owen Wilson stars as Dupree, a slacker who insists in job interviews on having Columbus Day and other random holidays as available days off. He never quite finds his place in life. Fortunately, he has his good friend Carl (Matt Dillon) to take him in. Unfortunately, this doesn't set well with Carl's newlywed wife Molly (Kate Hudson). At the same time, Carl struggles to impress Molly's dad (Michael Douglas) at work.

While the story should be focused more on Dupree, it bounces back and forth between Carl's defense of Dupree and his growing work-related stress. This all leads to a reversal in roles, where Molly becomes Dupree's defender while Carl grows increasingly paranoid of Dupree's intentions toward his wife.

All in all, it's this lack of focus that makes the movie less than what it could be. Wilson is his usual surfer-dude self, but it's Kate Hudson who brings life to the screen. I'm becoming a bigger fan of hers with each movie. Also be ready to laugh every time Carl's buddy, played by the increasingly hilarious Seth Rogen, shows up. Decent for a matinee or a rental, I give this one a C+.

"You, Me and Dupree" is rated PG-13 with a running time of 108 minutes.
