Blades of Glory

"Blades of Glory" was a disappointing Will Ferrell movie-going experience. While it has its moments, it could have been so much more.

Ferrell and Jon Heder star as Chazz Michael Michaels and Jimmy MacElroy, two male figure skaters who have battled each other on the ice for years. After an embarrassing moment at an international event, where they tied for first, both men are kicked out of the ice skating community for life. That is, until they find a loophole in the rules that would allow them to compete in doubles competition. While both are eager to once again skate, both struggle with the dual fact of skating with another man, especially when that guy is your biggest enemy.

Together, the two do manage to score points with the judges and the audience, once again bringing them into the spotlight. This, however, does not sit well with their newest competition, Fairchild and Stranz (Amy Poehler and Will Arnett), a brother/sister team. They try to distract the two men by pitting their outcast sister (Jenna Fischer) as a potential love interest for both.

While Ferrell does have some funny scenes as Chazz, a recovering sex addict, this doesn't come close to "Old School" or "Talladega Nights" funny. Heder plays the naive role well and holds his own with Ferrell. Poehler and Arnett make me laugh in anything they're in.

"Blades of Glory" is mildly entertaining, but is also not family entertainment as there are some strongly implied scenes. I'd wait for it to come out on DVD. This one lacks any sharp wit and results in fairly dull "Blades". I give it a C.

"Blades of Glory" is rated PG-13 with a running time of 93 minutes.
