Drillbit Taylor

"Drillbit Taylor" is barely worth my time or yours. Apparently even Judd Apatow (the producer) and Seth Rogen (a co-writer) have bad days.

Three nerdy kids enter their high school career with excitement and trepidation, looking forward to meeting older students, but also afraid of interacting with these same students. Almost immediately, they encounter the bullies they have always dreaded. What do you do when your teachers and principal won't protect you? Hire a body guard of course. This is when they come upon Drillbit Taylor (Owen Wilson), a down-on-his-luck bum who is barely getting by.

The combination had potential to be funny, and there might be a scene or two that makes you chuckle. Unfortunately, you cringe or yawn more than you laugh. The bullies are far too brutal, the teachers are far too clueless, and the parents serve little purpose. While the kids have their funny moments, Wilson seems to wander just as aimlessly as his character.

"Drillbit Taylor" is a two-bit movie that is destined for weekend repeats on Comedy Central. I give it a D.

"Drillbit Taylor" is rated PG-13 with a running time of 103 minutes.
