Kinsey

"Kinsey" is a solid production that I have trouble recommending to most of you.

Liam Neeson stars as Alfred Kinsey, the famed sex researcher who wrote the books "Sexual Behavior in the Human Male" in 1948 and "Sexual Behavior in the Human Female" in 1953. As a biology professor at Indiana University, Kinsey discovered a considerable lack of knowledge of the basic behaviors of men and women regarding sex. After establishing a research team and getting the financial backing, Kinsey sets out to reveal what others are too inhibited to discuss out loud.

The search for knowledge isn't the only thing that motivates Kinsey however. We learn of his ultra-Puritanical upbringing and abuse from his father (John Lithgow), his obsessive research habits, and of his greatest passion, his wife Clara (Laura Linney). If anything, "Kinsey" is as much a love story as it is a biopic.

Neeson and Linney are excellent in their roles and give the movie its heart and feeling. At the same time, the dialog is extremely frank and provocative, making this a movie you won't see on network television anytime soon. I could give examples, but most of your e-mail firewalls would probably block the content.

If you're feeling uninhibited and enjoy watching the rest of the theater squirm in their seats, "Kinsey" is the movie for you. I give it a B.

"Kinsey" is rated R with a running time of 2 hours.
