Knocked Up

I will predict right now that when I put together my Summer Movie Oscar list in September, "Knocked Up" will be one of the best movies of the season. It is hilarious, raunchy, disgusting, and even heart-felt. It's also probably not a good movie to go to on a blind date.

Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl star as Ben and Allison, a couple that hooks up after a drunken night at a bar. At no other time would these two have ever gotten together as Ben is a total slacker in life while Allison is an up-and-coming personality on the E! Network. However, the result of their one night together ends up with Allison pregnant.

Okay, so far it's sounding like an after-school special, but there's a lot more going on. Ben shares a house with a group of buddies who spend their time smoking up and drinking while putting together a website that measures the amount of female nudity in movies. Allison hangs out with her uptight sister who has two kids and a husband (Paul Rudd) who she thinks is cheating on her. The difference in the worlds of Ben and Allison could not be more dramatic.

It's after Allison breaks the news of the pregnancy to Ben that they try to build a relationship together. The effort they put into this is actually filmed with a surprising sweetness. While the drama in both their lives would seem pretty heavy, it only creates a new laugh-out-loud moment. This is a buddy movie about relationships and what it takes to maintain a level of trust. But trust me, it's done with an "American Pie" level of gross-out moments and comedic timing.

"Knocked Up" is graphic at times when discussing the pregnancy, holds nothing back when it comes to language and drug use, and really isn't for the faint of heart or the easily offended. I loved it and give it an A.

"Knocked Up" is rated R with a running time of 129 minutes.
