Star Trek

"Star Trek" is a movie that I will definitely go back and see again. Yes, I am a Trekkie, but this is one of those perfect summer movies with great action, solid character development, and leaves you wanting more.

Let's address the primary question in your mind. Do you need to be a Star Trek fan to see the newest experience? No, not at all. It does certainly help to know the characters going in, but it's not a prerequisite. However, I suspect the first 30 minutes are much more meaningful to the fully indoctrinated as we watch the growth and development of Kirk and Spock.

With that said, while you don't have to be a certified Trekkie, you do need to at least enjoy sci-fi movies involving time travel, black holes, and planet destruction.

While the overall story involves the bad guy getting revenge on Spock from something he did in the future, the real fun is in watching the Enterprise crew come together as a team. The very young, and fairly unknown, actors do an admirable job stepping into very big shoes. They are the ones who make the story fun to watch. Idealists will debate what all of this means for past storylines and future movies, but time continuum arguments give me a headache.

All in all, a great movie that has given new life to a forty-year old franchise. Check it out! I give it an A-.

"Star Trek" is rated PG-13 with a running time of 126 minutes.
